I Joined a podcast network a few years back as a chance to discuss my favorite television shows and movies.   One of the perks is applying for press passes to comic book conventions.  I LOVE going to these conventions.  The A-team as I call them cover the big conventions (San Diego Comic Con, New York Comic Con).  I focus my coverage on the smaller conventions, like Awesome Con.

I've had the opportunity to attend some amazing panels by folks working in the entertainment industry, as well as interview up and coming talent that are able to get their product and voices heard at these venues.

However, representation matters, and not everyone felt represented at the larger venues.  Spin offs have emerged like Blerd Con, which is billed as a convention designed to highlight the Black nerd community.  They proudly celebrate a connection with the LGBTQ, international, and disabled community.

Some conventions are born of necessity and practical reaction.  Wicomicon was a convention that rose from the ashes of another failed convention and provided an outlet for communities traditionally underrepresented at the larger conventions. 

If you have not visited one of these events, they are family friendly and full of fun.  You can go to see cosplayers and dress up yourself, but make sure you stay for the panels and other events.
